At the Florida Institute for Neurologic Rehabilitation, our challenges and goals are simple
and straightforward, with the goal of increasing and or improving the level of functioning of the individual with traumatic brain injury or neurological disability Our approach in treatment
and evaluation is multidisciplinary involving many professionals, physicians, speech therapists, occupational therapists, behavioral analysts, and psychologists. Our aim is to evaluate and treat the whole
individual in terms of their psychological, biological, neurological, cognitive, educational and environmental needs, in the least restrictive environment as possible. In terms of medications
for behavioral control, our philosophy is simple, we use the least amount of medication as possible and avoid polypharmacy. We recognize that the use of certain types of psychiatric medications, such as anti
psychotics, can have detrimental effects in the brain injured individual, and indeed can be double edged swords. As an example, it is not uncommon for us to wean clients off multiple psychiatric medications at the
time of admission and use safer alternatives in treatment, such as behavioral modification techniques. We are constantly striving to improve our treatment methods; again with the whole
individual in mind. Our goals for the millennium become the standard by which other rehabilitation centers must compare to. Jorge J.
